Joshua Kochis tries not to let anything go to waste. He has always had busy hands and a pile of scrap wood somewhere. He collects big roots and cool rocks, old fences, and vintage tree stands among other things. He uses mostly salvaged material to make assemblage installations, utilitarian objects, rustic furniture, and decorative images. His creative practice has seasons.
Joshua spends a lot of time thinking about manual labor, landscape design, and public space. He has built relationships with local organizations to create landscaping elements and sculptural infrastructure for public parks across Detroit, where he is based on the east side of the city. He spends a lot of time in his backyard and volunteers planting trees whenever he has the chance.
